Turkish Citizenship with Long Term Residence
Dear visitor, welcome to our Turkish Citizenship with Long-Term Residence page. This application method is called General Acquisition of Turkish Citizenship. Article 9 of the Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901 talks about citizenship acquired later. This subsequent acquisition is possible with the decision of the competent authority, adoption or the exercise of the right to choose. The situation of acquiring citizenship by the decision of the competent authority is also divided into 4. These are generally, exceptionally, through marriage and recovery. In accordance with Article 15 of the said Citizenship Law, foreign nationals who have resided in the Republic of Turkey for 5 (five) years without interruption may gain the right to apply for Turkish citizenship and acquire our country's citizenship through the general method, if the other conditions below are met. Foreign nationals who want to acquire Turkish citizenship later, that is, under general provisions, must meet the following conditions:

A foreign national must be an adult according to the law of his/her own state. If the person is stateless, he must be of legal age in accordance with the civil laws of the Republic of Turkey. He must also have the power of discrimination.
As of the date of application for Turkish citizenship, the applicant must have resided in Turkey uninterruptedly for at least five years retroactively.
The foreign national must clearly show his/her desire to settle in Turkey. For example, acquiring a real estate property in Turkey. Marrying a citizen of the Republic of Turkey, starting a business or investing in a company in Turkey. Working in our country with a work permit and having completed your education in Turkey. Apart from these, having a father, mother or child who has previously acquired Turkish citizenship is also a valid reason for making this application.

Other Conditions...
The person must behave in accordance with public morality. Social life requires some responsibilities, and the person who wants to acquire Turkish citizenship must act with this sense of responsibility. A person should inspire trust in the society and should not behave contrary to the order.
The applicant must be able to speak and understand the Turkish language at a level that allows him to take part in Turkish society.
The applicant must be able to provide for himself and his family (dependants), if any, in Turkey. The person is expected to have a profession or regular income.
The person should not be in a situation that would pose a threat to the security of our country or public order.

The determination of the principles regarding the exercise of this discretion is within the authority of the Council of Ministers.
Turkish Citizenship Application Process
The application for Turkish citizenship can be made by the applicant personally to the governorship where the foreigner resides or by a proxy with a special power of attorney given in this regard. In cases where the applicant foreign national is under the age of eighteen (underage) and/or lacks the power of discernment, the application in question can be made by the person's parent or guardian.

In the citizenship application, the Republic of Turkey TR foreigner ID number of the foreign national is taken as basis and the process is done with this. For this reason, people who do not have a residence permit and who have not yet received their foreign identity number cannot directly apply for Turkish citizenship.

Applications of foreigners who have been determined not to have resided in Turkey for five (5) years continuously, who do not have a legal residence permit or who do not show the intention to settle in Turkey despite having a legal residence permit are not accepted. In addition, citizenship applications of people who are asylum seekers, who come as refugees, who are in Turkey for treatment, who accompany a person who is receiving treatment, or who are in our country as a tourist or student resident, are not accepted. People whose trials are ongoing for any crime, people who are convicted or detained are also among the groups of people whose applications will not be accepted.

A foreign national who wants to acquire Turkish citizenship can also stay abroad, provided that it does not exceed twelve months in total within the required residence period (five years) in accordance with the new legal regulations. If the total period spent abroad does not exceed twelve months, these periods are evaluated within the foreseen residence period. Otherwise, the application is rejected because the person cannot reach the sufficient number of days. The result of the citizenship application is notified to the relevant person, whether positive or negative.
